The Quechee Lakes Company Awards Scholarship Prize to Winners of The Quechee Club’s Cardboard Box Derby
The Quechee Lakes Company upped the ante at this year’s Quechee Club Cardboard Box Derby by awarding the First Place Club Champion a scholarship prize. For the first time in its twelve year history, the Derby presented winners a monetary award along with the coveted trophy.
Quechee, Vermont, February 2008 – The Quechee Lakes Company, developer of Vermont’s premier second home destination, Quechee Lakes, awarded a scholarship prize to the First Place Club Champions at the annual Cardboard Box Derby on February 23, 2008.
Brianna Callahan, Meaghan Callahan, Hannah Glick, Rachel Glick, and Caroline Novak made up team Frosty Girls, who won the race competition at the Derby and are the 2008 First Place Club Champions. The Quechee Lakes Company, in partnership with the Randolph National Bank branch in Quechee, awarded the team a $750 savings bond in recognition of their achievement. “The Quechee Lakes Company is so excited to be a part of this community event that brings generations of family, friends and neighbors together. Everyone has such a great time and we are so pleased to be able to contribute!” commented Elizabeth Rogers, Program Manager of The Quechee Lakes Concierge.
The Frosty Girls range in age from twelve to thirteen and were very excited to receive an award from The Quechee Lakes Company in addition to a Derby trophy. According to eighth grader Rachel Glick, “We are ecstatic, and it was nice how all the younger children came up and congratulated us and were really good sports. It makes me feel like I’m a good sport too.”
The Quechee Club Cardboard Box Derby celebrated its twelfth anniversary at the Quechee ski area on Saturday afternoon with eighty boxes registered and hundreds of families and friends gathered to compete and spectate. “The Quechee Club Cardboard Box Derby is without a doubt, the highlight of the winter season.” said Scott Anderson, Club Manager. “The action is exciting and the energy from the crowd and participants is electric. Some boxes go nowhere, others implode halfway down the track and many boxes reach impressive speeds on their way to victory.”
The Quechee Club Cardboard Box Derby, now managed by Recreation Director Pat Feth, was first organized by Scott Anderson in February of 1997. The number of participating boxes over the years has grown from 50 to 80, which are organized in heats of four to race down the Sledding Hill in a single-elimination format. According to Mr. Anderson, “The last three boxes of the competition race for the “Club Champion” award which is highly coveted. In addition, we hand out trophies for various other creative and performance categories such as Rookie of the Year, Best Crash, etc …”
While twelve boxes were recognized for different exhibitions of speed and creativity, only one team could win the “Biggest Dud” title, which awards the “box that doesn’t function”. Real Men of Genius, comprising brothers Craig Carlson and Trevor Carlson, Wayne Hopkins, Mike Hoskins, and Brad Thompson, constructed a large Budweiser-themed box that spilled its drivers out long before crossing the finishing line. Parents and cheerleaders of the Carlson brothers, Dean and Pat Carlson said, “We’ve lived here twelve years, and this is our first race. Craig and Trevor are over thirty years old, but we’re having a blast and hope to enter next year!”
